This rocky and remote region of Spain is a cradle for intense and flavourful reds which many wine connoisseurs and collectors consider to be some of Spain's most elite wines.
Hilly rocky terrain, slate soil and leafy green vineyards fill this rural region in southern Spain. The beautiful geographical contours of the landscape require the vines here be planted in steep terraces at altitudes ranging from 100m to 700m above sea level. These terraces seem to be drawn onto the land and climb up the hillsides in neat curving rows, like enormous staircases, creating a picturesque landscape which is enjoyed by the dedicated local workers who pick the grapes by hand. This terrain has provided the opportunity to highlight the most interesting characteristics of both indigenous grapes (such as Garnacha and Cariñena) and international varieties (including Syrah, Cabernet, Sauvignon and Merlot) for hundreds of years.
The BRAVO-ESCOS family has a long, proud history of ranching and farming in many corners of the world. Our passion for agriculture began in Uruguay, where we owned and ran several cattle ranches. As we learned to work the land, we were drawn to wine-making. Our love for wine stems from our grandparents who taught us that small details and joys are what makes a day special. This is a lesson we have passed to our children as well as their children, all of whom are involved in the labour of love that is wine-making. Wine has always been a part of all of our family lives. It accompanies us through our business, brings us closer to our friends, and makes every family dinner that extra bit special with every familiar ‘clink’ of the glass! At Las Nubes, we believe wine is for sharing with our families, our friends, and the good people that surround us.
In 2016 we had the opportunity to bring our passion for wine crafting to the old continent. Family connections in the area brought us to El Priorato in Spain. Wine making has been a staple of life here since the 12th century, when French Carthusian Monks established vineyards using traditional planting techniques; turning this rocky and remote region of the Iberian peninsula into a cradle for the intense and flavourful reds that are typical of the area and compose its excellent reputation amongst the wine-enlightened.
Our family vineyard is located in the heart of the El Priorato region, near a sleepy town called Torroja del Priorat.
Since establishing our base in El Priorato, we have been busy implementing our artisan approach to wine making, ensuring we deliver only the best tasting wine.
Thanks to the warm, moderate climate; with intense sunshine throughout the day, chilly evenings, and foggy early mornings, the vineyards yield fruit that offers concentrated, lush aromas and flavours. Our family prides itself in allowing these healthy, beautiful vineyards speak for themselves.
The resulting wines are characteristic of the El Priorato region: clean, rich, and with deep flavours and aromas. Wines from El Priorato typically tend to mature beautifully, eventually yielding the lively flavours of their youth for the smoky elegance and layered flavours of age.
We have grown to love the land we work with. We have honed our processes through hard work, and the help of many great people as well as the efforts of many generations of our family and our friends.
We are excited to welcome you to our vineyard and we cannot wait to share our passion with you. We hope you enjoy the fruits of our labour as much as we do!
